Greetings. I currently live in Nepal, where I write, edit and also host the podcast Nepal Now.
I worked as a journalist from 1991 till 2007, in various roles: part-time reporter at the Ottawa bureau of The Canadian Press, editor of weekly newspapers, online reporter for Reuters in Malaysia, reporter and editor for IPS news agency, etc.
Much of the content on this site reflects my time in Nepal, where I worked as a journalist until I joined the United Nations human rights office in 2007. I worked with the UN till I left Nepal in 2010.
From 2010 to 2016 I managed communications for Framework Convention Alliance, an international NGO that supports the global tobacco control treaty.
In November 2016 I returned to Nepal with my family, and when my work assignments dried up during Covid-19 in 2020 I launched Nepal Now. It has been my preoccupation during the pandemic — I’m pleasantly surprised that I’ve now posted 20+ episodes — but I continue writing and editing and am now working on what I hope will be published as multimedia reports on maternal health and malnutrition in Nepal.
Let me know what you think of this blog. I’m on Twitter and email.

Hi Marty. Not sure whether we have ever met but if not I hope to meet you some day. I am Billi and I work for the Himalayan Database. Just read your piece about Ueli in the Nepali Times and great that you got to talk to Miss Hawley. I was just surprised that you wrote that she had interviewed Ueli before he set out as Miss Hawley no longer interviews expeditions – and she certainly did not talk to Ueli beforehand. I know it is not important – but just wanted to point it out.
Warm Regards
Billi

Hi Billi. We haven’t met but I certainly know of you from my work at Nepali Times a decade or so ago. Miss Hawley did tell me clearly that she had spoken to Ueli before he left for the last trip. I knew from a previous conversation that she no longer meets all the expeditions but I figured she did see him because they were old friends.
Thanks for clarifying,
Marty
